In order to accelerate progress in addressing road traffic injury, financing is critical. Governments and city authorities need catalytic support to make further progress. This is an introduction to the FIA Foundation’s advocacy agenda on how increased and improved financing is needed for scaled-up impact on road traffic injury around the world.

An investigation into the health costs of motorcycle taxi crashes in Kenya. This study sets out to understand helmet usage, and the scale and impact of motorcycle related deaths and injuries, to highlight the urgent need for immediate action to strengthen the enforcement of the Kenyan motorcycle helmet standard to help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries linked to low helmet prevalence.

The FIA Foundation reports on its charitable activities in 2023, including advocacy for youth at the UN Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals; accelerating the electric vehicle transition; the latest progress in car and truck safety; protecting children on the journey to school; and playing a key role in the safety of top level motor sport.

This is the latest update of the GFEI benchmarking report looking at the specific fuel consumption of light-duty vehicles (LDVs). It focuses on changes between 2019 and 2022, in particular the impact of Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and electric vehicle (EV) market changes.

The FIA Foundation Financial Statements for 2022.

This report by US research body ITS UC Davis and the UK Government’s ZEV Transition Council (ZEVTC), supported by the FIA Foundation examines the status of zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) uptake across the world and considers how to accelerate the transition as part of emergency measures to avoid a climate catastrophe. Recommendations include the need to recognise the varied levels of ZEV policies across the Global South, to appreciate the profound need for equitable funding, and secure collective global buy-in to address the global challenge.

This report from the World Bank’s Sustainable Urban Mobility for All (SUM4All) gender working group was the results of pioneering research undertaken by POLIS & Heather Allen and funded by FIA Foundation, which examined existing data and conducted in-depth interviews and polling to build a comprehensive global snapshot of lived experiences of women working in the transport sector.

Adolescent girls’ journeys to access sexual health services in four countries across Africa are often expensive, dangerous, and inaccessible. This report from Girl Effect identifies the key changes needed to improve equitable access.

At a time when an increased uptake of sustainable mobility is vital for climate, health and air quality reasons, this report examines why women in Nairobi, Kenya are less keen than men to cycle. Based on a study by the NGO Flone Initiative, and drawing on front-line evidence from women in the city, it also outlines key measures to reverse this trend.

This report aims to provide an overview of the key issues surrounding motorcycles in Africa to give context and facts – and to provide recommendations – to help all involved to make informed decisions that will maximise the benefits that motorcycles offer and to reduce the risks.

Why is adopting a gender-based analysis necessary when considering decarbonising transport policies? How can we strengthen awareness of the gender, transport and climate change policy nexus? What role do governments play? This report examines the linkages between gender equality, transport and climate change to help develop policies that can achieve both gender equality and decarbonising transport goals by 2050. It provides guiding principles with specific actions to help countries and companies align their gender equality and decarbonising transport goals.

The FIA Foundation Financial Statements for 2021.

This paper aims to contribute to achieving a ‘safe and healthy journey for every child’. This is a key part of the Habitat III New Urban Agenda, and will contribute to achieving a range of Sustainable Development Goals.

This special document marks the first 20 years of the FIA Foundation.

The FIA Foundation reports on its charitable activities during 2021, including participating in COP26 to argue for cleaner vehicles and investment in zero carbon travel; campaigning for ‘Streets for Life with the United Nations; supporting motor sport safety research and programmes; and providing grants to UNICEF and IFRC to support equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

GFEI’s global targets and capacity building support policies for vehicle efficiency and electrification. Our new report on GFEI’s ZERO pathway sets out key actions to secure global fleet transformation to zero carbon vehicles by 2050.

Launched to coincide with the UN Streets for Life campaign, the FIA Foundation’s new Advocacy Hub, based within the Child Health Initiative, will focus on supporting global, national and city campaigns for 30km/h streets where children and youth live, walk and cycle.

FIA Foundation Financial Statements 2020

Our 2020 Annual Report, ‘Safe & Green Mobility in a Time of Pandemic’, highlights the charity’s response to COVID-19, including our Solidarity Fund and support for policy efforts to ‘Build Back Better’.

This report reviews the state of play in terms of transport data, and the gaps in our knowledge about women’s transport behaviours, as reported in a survey of over 140 transport professionals.

The report Renewable Energy Pathways in Road Transport points out five key pathways to limit the growing impact of transport, and especially that of road transport, on global greenhouse gas emissions.

The FIA Foundation partnered with Safetipin to build a picture of how adolescent girls make their journeys. The study uses innovative technology, supported by discussions with local women, to understand how their experiences and behaviours are shaped by the physical and social framework in which they live.

The FIA Foundation Financial Statements for 2019.

The Manifesto calls for a transformation of urban streets by 2030 into safe, low speed and accessible space that puts people first, encouraging zero carbon walking and cycling, by deploying the ‘Speed Vaccine’: safe footpaths and crossings; protected cycleways; and maximum 30 km/h speed limits anywhere children and traffic mix.

The report highlights the disproportionate exposure to risk of child pedestrians in sub-Saharan Africa and calls for a concerted effort to provide footpaths and reduce vehicle traffic speeds.

Potential changes to the vehicle emissions regime after Brexit could pose real risks to public health, as well as a loss of access to valuable EU markets for the £4.9bn UK motor industry. This report examines some potential regulation scenarios and their impact on a post-Brexit Britain.

This report provides an overview of GFEI’s work globally, highlighting how improved vehicle fuel economy is vital for tackling climate change. It was published to coincide with the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco in September 2018.

The FIA Foundation Financial Statements for 2017.

The report was published to coincide with the UN High Level Political Forum in July 2018, which included a focus on energy efficiency as part of a review of SDG7. The report also includes a special case study of GFEI’s work with Jamaica.

This report calls for region-wide action and global support to implement the solutions that are already proven to save lives, and to end the preventable epidemic destroying children’s futures.

TRUE data provides cities with a clearer understanding of the levels and causes of high emissions, information on vehicle fleet characteristics, and insights into effective emission curbing measures such as vehicle bans, fee-charging schemes, low emissions zones, or incentive programs.

The Ella Se Mueve Segura study, funded by FIA Foundation and CAF – Latin American Development Bank, explores women’s personal security on public transport in three cities; Quito, Ecuador; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Santiago, Chile. 

Published to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Vietnam’s 2007 introduction of a universal helmet law, ‘Head First’ details the decade-long campaign to secure the legislations, and the decade-long implementation effort since.

GFEI’s new ‘COP23 update’ shares progress made since the COP21 Climate Summit in Paris. It includes summaries of recent activities in the past year and a progress chart for all the countries where GFEI works.

This report takes London as a case study, focusing on the issue of air pollution from vehicles and exploring the actions and policies in place to enable safe, clean and healthy journeys to school.

The Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) is a global partnership, hosted by UN Environment, working with developing and transitional countries to reduce air pollution from vehicles by promoting cleaner fuels and vehicles. 

This booklet describes priority interventions proven to reduce casualties, calls for new donors to the cause, and sets out the key advocacy initiatives that are building on the legacy of the Make Roads Safe campaign.

'In for a Penny: Can micro-donations benefit global road safety?' is a research report by Price Waterhouse Coopers examine the potential of corporate/consumer micro-donations as a new source of funding for global road safety.

China's Quest for Car Ownership is an independent report from Cultural Dynamics, commissioned as part of the FIA Foundation's Research Series of policy, thought and discussion papers. The report reviews the values of young Chinese consumers in relation to mobility and environmental issues, and particularly attitudes to car purchase and use. 

The FIA Foundation, working with partners through the Global Fuel Economy Initiative, the UN’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative, the Climate & Clean Air Coalition and the Partnership for Clean Fuels & Vehicles, is part of efforts to make road transport more fuel efficient and to reduce toxic tailpipe emissions.
