The Occupational Road Safety Alliance has estimated that between one quarter and one third of reported road casualties globally involve people on the roads for work purposes. The costs associated with occupational road safety are high for both employers and employees, and impact service delivery. It is clear that more action is needed to manage these risks.

Through the FIA Foundation’s support, the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST) in partnership with Cranfield University and the IRU Academy, recently launched the EASST Academy, an online road safety training platform for fleet managers to promote effective management of work-related road safety.

The course is primarily targeted at low- and middle-income countries. However, having recently completed the course, I can attest to its relevance and value worldwide.

The online video lectures are easy to follow, providing informative and useful insights from an impressive selection of industry experts and practitioners, including David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP and Adrian Walsh of Road Safe.

The course content guides the user through every aspect of effective road safety management, from managing a business case to conducting vehicle checks and encouraging good driver behaviour. Unlike classroom-based learning, the course provides access to real examples and best practices through bonus videos and key management resources that can be revisited on demand. Short lectures make it easy to fit the course into a busy schedule, anywhere in the world. The course is also less expensive than traditional classroom modules, and at $49.95, can be more affordable for those in low- and middle- income countries.

Occupational road safety is a vital element to reducing the number of road traffic collisions globally, and fleet management is a key component to reaching the SDG target to halve the number of road deaths and injuries by 2020. The positive effect of strong fleet management extends beyond employees, to their children and communities as well. This course is best for anyone interested in learning more about how to keep employees, and their families safe on the roads.
