Share the Road gets creative to inspire sustainable transport in East Africa
Share the Road, supported by the FIA Foundation and led by UN Environment, co-organised an innovative training and networking event in Nairobi on the 3rd-7th April 2017.
The event, in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute and the University of York, explored creative methods that promote greater inclusion and participation in decision-making to bring about more inclusive urban transport.
The workshop brought together local organisations working on transport issues to explore the usefulness of creative methods to respond to local transport challenges and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It included around 40 stakeholders from different sectors across East Africa including: creative individuals and organisations, transport planners and providers, local council and municipal government (e.g. urban planning), Government ministries, NGOs and civil society organisations, and academia.
The event included a field trip into Nairobi to explore in situ some of the creative methods as well as to visit a few of the organisations using creative methods to engage people in inclusive transport solutions. The workshop provided inspiration and guidance about how creative methods can be used to inspire policy, and play a role in communicating the Sustainable Development Goals to bring about safer roads and improved facilities for walking and cycling.
The FIA Foundation have funded Share the Road since its launch in 2008 in collaboration with UN Environment, who manage its programme of activities.
