Risk Factors
The World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention, published jointly in 2004 by the World Health Organisation and the World Bank, identified the main risk factors for road traffic injuries which included non-use of safety belts, non-use of helmets, excessive speed and drink/driving.
The messages in the Think Before You Drive Campaign are based on some of the risk factors outlined in the World Report. They are the factors that can influence both the likelihood of being involved in a crash and the severity of a crash:
- Inappropriate or excessive speed
- Presence of alcohol, medicinal or recreational drugs
- Non use of seat belts and child restraints
- Insufficient vehicle crash protection for occupants (including the presence and positioning of a head restraint.)
