Foundation launches global petition for road safety
A global petition for road safety has been launched by the FIA Foundation at its annual Policy Forum, held in Hungary.
The Think Global online petition calls for a greater international response to the growing global road safety crisis, which kills more than 1.2 million people a year, the majority in developing countries. People across the world are being encouraged to sign the statement to show their concern for road safety to be taken more seriously by governments and international organisations such as the United Nations and the G8.
FIA Foundation Chairman Rosario Alessi launched the petition at a photo call at the meeting in Budapest. He said: “Three thousand people are killed every day on the world’s roads. Many thousands more are injured. Road traffic injuries devastate whole families and communities. In developing countries road crashes can rob families of their only wage earner and tip them back into poverty. With this petition we can begin to engage with the public and raise the profile of road safety, and demonstrate to governments that it is an economic and moral issue requiring urgent action at the highest level”.
