U.S. and Canadian non-government organizations (NGOs), along with government colleagues, have met at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC to plan for coordination of activities during the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020). These organizations committed to working together over the next ten years as founding members of the Global Road Safety Decade of Action Working Group.
Hosted by the FIA Foundation and the Transportation Research Board (TRB), along with other Organizing Committee Members from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Columbia University, and National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), the meeting was attended by over 90 participants representing more than 60 organizations and government departments.
With panels on User Behaviour, Infrastructure Improvements, Vehicle Safety, and Institutional Leadership and Organization, the meeting brought together diverse groups including relief agencies, advocacy organizations, scientific and professional societies, industry, donor organizations, and philanthropies, as well as government representatives from the Departments of Transportation, State, and Health and Human Services, as well as local, county, and state government. During the many open discussion periods, many organizations spoke of their planned commitments for road safety activities during the Decade of Action. This Action Group will continue to communicate regularly and coordinate efforts during the Decade.
