Green vehicles will be put to the test this autumn, in a fuel consumption challenge co-sponsored by the FIA Foundation and the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI).
Using the same route as the famous London to Brighton Veterans race, but in this case starting from Brighton, the ‘Future Car Challenge’ is to use the least energy possible on the 60 mile course (www.futurecarchallenge.com) The rally, which takes place on Saturday 6 November 2010, the day before the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally, will finish in front of an estimated 250,000 crowd in London’s Regent Street. UK motoring organisation the RAC organises the challenge, which this year is co-sponsored by GFEI.
It is open to road-legal; concept, development, pre-production and production vehicles in three categories, passenger motorcars, light commercial vehicles (max 3.5 tonne), and motorcycles. Vehicles can be powered either by electricity (EV), by hybrid source (HV), or by an internal combustion engine up to 110g/km CO₂ emission fuelled by any legal means (ICE). The event already has 30 entrants, and organisers expect to receive many more.
Speaking at the launch of the Future Car Challenge at the RAC Club in London Roger Etcell of MotionWorks, the lead organizers of the event, said ‘This is a new annual motoring event for the 21st Century. It is a showcase to demonstrate and promote new technologies. We are delighted that the FIA Foundation’s Global Fuel Economy Initiative is lending us its support’’
Sheila Watson, the GFEI’s Executive Secretary said ‘This is a really exciting event, of which we are proud to be a part. It is particularly exciting to see completely new cars in action right next to the veterans, many of which were pathbreakers in their time too’
