The UN General Assembly will hold a debate on global road safety on 2nd March 2010. It is hoped that the General Assembly will formally approve a UN Decade of Action for Road Safety at this meeting, in line with the ‘Moscow Declaration’ approved at the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, held in Moscow last November.
The Russian Federation, which is leading negotiations on a new UN resolution, is holding informal meetings with UN Member States at the UN in New York during February. If you want to urge your government to support a UN resolution for the Decade of Action, please write to your Foreign Minister (see here for a draft letter) or contact your UN permanent mission in New York http://www.un.org/en/members/index.shtml
Michelle Yeoh, Global Ambassador for the Make Roads Safe campaign, said: “It is vital that the United Nations takes this opportunity to endorse the decision of the Moscow Ministerial Conference and approve a Decade of Action for road safety. Millions of lives are at stake, and March 2nd can signal a new beginning in the way the world faces up to the challenge of road traffic injuries”.
