The final meeting of the International Consultative Committee for the forthcoming Global Ministerial Conference on road safety has been held in Moscow.

Chaired by General Victor Kiryanov, the Head of the State Traffic Police of the Russian Federation, and Dr Etienne Krug, Director of Injury Prevention at WHO, the meeting reviewed the proposed speakers and ministerial invitees for the conference, which will be opened by the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, on 19th November.

David Ward, Director General of the FIA Foundation, also joined colleagues from WHO and the World Bank in a meeting with the Russian Interior Minister, Rashid Nurgaliev, and the Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Yakovenko, to discuss the conference. Speaking after the meeting, David Ward said: “We are delighted that the conference is attracting a high level of participation from transport, interior and health ministers from across the world. It is particularly pleasing that there seems to be a strong attendance by ministers from middle and low income countries, where the road injury epidemic is growing fastest, as well as senior representation from the major donor countries such as the US and UK. The Russian government is to be congratulated on its preparations and the commitment and time its senior officials are giving to making this first ever global governmental conference on road safety a success. Now we need to ensure that the conference sets an agenda for real action, and endorses our call for a Decade of Action”.
