The Holy See has given its support for the Make Roads Safe campaign’s call for a Decade of Action.

The Commission for Global Road Safety’s Chairman, Lord Robertson, and Patron, HRH Prince Michael of Kent, have led a Make Roads Safe delegation for a high level meeting at the Vatican, together with the campaign’s ambassador Michelle Yeoh.

The Prince, the peer and the movie star met with Cardinal Giovanni Cheli, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, the ministry within the Holy See responsible for road safety. Following the meeting Cardinal Cheli signed and posed for photos with a campaign signature board, giving his endorsement to the campaign for a UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.

Commenting after the meeting, HRH Prince Michael said of his conversation with the Cardinal:

“The Cardinal assured me of the Roman Catholic Church’s recognition of the importance of road safety, not least because it is the priests, like the doctors and the police, who are in the front line when it comes to picking up the broken pieces of lives ruined by road injuries. By engaging with leaders of all faiths, and their congregations, we can do much to raise the profile of road safety and bring about the improvements we all seek.”

The Commission for Global Road Safety later hosted a dinner at the Vatican Museum for 250 politicians, UN officials and road safety campaigners to mark the launch of its new ‘Make Roads Safe’ report.
