The FIA Foundation has confirmed its 10 year commitment to the International Road Assessment Programme, at a ceremony held in Moscow ahead of the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety.

The €10 million, ten year, support for the work of iRAP, which conducts independent safety assessments of road design in developing countries, guarantees the core costs of the programme for the ‘Decade of Action’. First announced at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York last September, the partnership was signed by FIA Foundation Director General David Ward and iRAP Chairman John Dawson at a Make Roads Safe event in the Kempinski Hotel, Moscow.

David Ward said:

“iRAP’s work has revolutionised policy approaches to safe road design and brought the issue to the attention of governments and multilateral development banks across the developing world. Just as importantly, iRAP has clearly defined the problems and calculated both the costs and benefits of life-saving solutions. As the original donor to this innovative programme, the FIA Foundation is delighted to now be able to provide the financial support to ensure that iRAP can continue to advocate for safer roads. If iRAP can achieve its objective of working with countries to fix 5% of the world’s worst roads over the next ten years, more than 1 million deaths and serious injuries could be prevented each year”.
