The American Public Health Association (APHA), which represents more than 50,000 health professionals in the US, has launched an online letter-writing campaign in support of the proposed Decade of Action.
APHA is seeking to build momentum ahead of the Moscow Ministerial by encouraging supporters to write to President Obama and members of Congress urging US support for the proposed Decade of Action. The letter also asks representatives to add their name to House Concurrent Resolution 74, a bi-partisan call for action on global road safety led by Representatives Robert Wexler, Chris Van Hollen and Dan Burton.
In a connected move, ten US organizations have signed on to a letter to President Obama from US Make Roads Safe Chair Norman Mineta, a former Transportation Secretary, urging that a high-level US delegation participate in the Moscow conference. The organizations involved are: America Automobile Association (AAA), AAA Foundation, American Association of State Highway and Transport Engineers (AASHTO), APHA, American Public Transportation Association, Governors Highway Safety Association, Institute of Transportation Engineers, Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD), Safe Kids Worldwide and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
T. Bella Dinh Zarr, US Director of the Make Roads Safe campaign, said: “We have a strong US coalition supporting the Make Roads Safe campaign and the call for a Decade of Action. With the active involvement of powerful organizations like APHA we aim to reach policymakers, raise the profile of the global road injury epidemic, and secure the widest possible support for the Decade of Action ahead of the Moscow conference”.
