The United Nations General Assembly will debate the Make Roads Safe campaign’s proposal for a UN Conference on road safety at the end of March.

Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, Chairman of the Commission for Global Road Safety which originally called for a UN Conference in its ‘Make Roads Safe’ report will attend the debate in New York and urge governments to back the proposal. The Russian Federation has offered to host a governmental conference if the UN approves. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has urged UN member states to support the proposal.

David Ward, FIA Foundation Director General, said: “The UN has the opportunity to take a historic decision to seriously tackle road deaths. We will be keeping up the pressure in advance of this debate, working with our partners around the world in the Make Roads Safe campaign to urge a new level of international commitment for road safety’.
