The 7th Annual MoVe Mobility Forum took place in Venice, this week with the theme of ‘Car dependency: can metropolitan mobility be managed? Issues, controversies, possible solutions?’
The event – which was sponsored in part by the FIA Foundation was attended by 100 invited guests from international, national and local governments; the private sector; research institutions and universities; and NGOs.
The issue of ‘car dependency’ was approached from 3 different perspectives, that of the city, the individual, and the society which is impacted by its effects, and policy options to reduce such dependency were aired and discussed throughout.
Speaking during the Forum, Sheila Watson, FIA Foundation’s Director of Environment, said. ‘All of the evidence shows that cars will continue to play a key role in mobility, and are therefore an important element of any urban sustainability strategy. It is vital therefore that we do everything we can to ensure that they are as fuel efficient as possible. She also went on to describe the work the FIA Foundation is undertaking with IEA, UNEP and ITF to promote a global approach to greater Fuel Efficiency, the 50by50 Global Fuel Economy Initiative.
