Former US President Bill Clinton has given his support to the Make Roads Safe campaign and signed our Call for a Decade of Action for Road Safety.
Mr Clinton was briefed on the road traffic injury epidemic by the campaign’s Global Ambassador Michelle Yeoh during a Clinton Global Initiative forum in Hong Kong. Road safety was not on the agenda of the CGI meeting, but taking part in a discussion on health and education during the forum, Michelle Yeoh urged participants to recognise road safety as a key element in delivering on the Millennium Development Goals. In a powerful plea for action, Michelle Yeoh described the experiences of some of the road crash victims she has met on fact finding tours in India, Africa and Vietnam and warned delegates that road traffic injuries, the world’s most neglected epidemic, are set to rise dramatically unless action is taken.
President Clinton commented: "Travel-related injuries and deaths affect millions of people around the world. I'm hopeful that action can be taken to ensure that no one dies before their time."
Other participants at the CGI meeting joined Bill Clinton in endorsing the ‘Decade of Action’. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines; Jet Li, movie star and founder of the One Foundation; and Oscar winning movie director Oliver Stone were amongst those adding their support to the Make Roads Safe campaign.
