Georgian road safety review by Foundation fellow

15/11/2007

A review of the road safety situation in the CIS state of Georgia has been published by the new Georgian Road Safety Partnership.

The new NGO, which has been established with the support of the FIA Foundation, is led by Gela Kvashilava, who recently participated in the FIA Foundation Road Safety Fellowship as part of the John Smith Memorial Trust’s governance programme. During the FIA Foundation road safety programme, Gela spent time with UK road safety practitioners, including the police, local authorities, the Department for Transport, NGOs and researchers. The John Smith Memorial Trust brings young political leaders from across the CIS, including the Russian Federation, to the UK for a wide ranging programme on governance and media – see www.johnsmithmemorialtrust.org for more information.

The Georgian Road Safety Partnership is the second road safety NGO in the Caucasus region to be established with the support of the FIA Foundation. In neighbouring Armenia, the Armenian Road Safety Council, led by another former John Smith road safety fellow, Poghos Shahinyan, has successfully established campaigns promoting fairer traffic policing and seat belt use, and is developing infrastructure safety work. The Armenian Road Safety Council is also attracting additional international donor support, including from USAID.
