Traditionally rotten tomatoes have been thrown at politicians by angry citizens. But in Hungary the Government has adopted the humble tomato in its campaign for safer roads.
Two giant tomatoes adorns the side of the Ministry of Economy & Transport in Budapest to demonstrate the importance of wearing a seat belt. One tomato is belted, plump and round, the other, unbelted, has met a sticky end. The tomatoes first appeared as the central message in an award winning seat belt safety awareness campaign launched by the Hungarian Automobile Club and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) in 2004, with support from the FIA Foundation. The FIA Foundation has also helped to finance the production of the massive poster, which features the Foundation’s crash test dummy character. The poster has been used as the backdrop for a new Government ten point plan for improving Hungarian road safety, including action on seat belt use.
