The national automobile clubs which make up the members of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have endorsed the Make Roads Safe campaign at the FIA’s Annual Meeting in Barcelona.

Representatives of more than 100 automobile clubs signed a Declaration on Global Road Safety endorsing the Make Roads Safe report from the Commission for Global Road Safety and pledging support for the Make Roads Safe campaign and the United Nations Global Road Safety Week in 2007 in order to ‘ensure that road safety takes its proper place on the agenda of the G8, United Nations, and other relevant regional groupings such as the European Union, the Asian Pacific Economic Community and the OECD.

The President of the FIA, Max Mosley, joined other leading elected officials of the FIA and Presidents of automobile clubs in personally signing the Declaration. The signing ceremony, and the Annual Meeting, were organised by the Royal Automobile Club of Catalunya (RACC). Max Mosley said: “Every day 3,000 people are killed on the world’s roads. The idea that this is inevitable must be challenged. In Formula One we have seen that better design of both cars and circuits have vastly reduced the risks in the sport. The same principles can work on the roads of developing countries, if political commitment, investment and effective enforcement are in place”.
