Kenya’s Transport Minister launches a road safety crackdown

In plans launched by Kenya’s Transport Minister, Chris Murungaru, pedestrians who fail to cross the road at designated areas will soon be fined between Sh300 and Sh 500, which is equal to around 3-5 days’ average income in Kenya.

The fines will be levied on those who do not use zebra-crossings and flyovers, where available, to get across the road.

In the road safety crackdown, intended to reinforce road safety rules introduced in Kenya in February last year, it will also become illegal to cross the road when traffic lights show red, even if there is no vehicle in sight.

Traffic police commandant Daudi Kyalo was reported in Nairobi’s ‘The Nation’ as saying that teams of officers are in place in many parts of the country to educate people on road safety. Schools in particular will be targeted to educate students on the road code.
