FIA Foundation chairman Rosario Alessi has described new tougher car emission standards as ‘a challenge worth facing’ in a speech to European policymakers.
Mr Alessi was speaking at a workshop on proposed ‘Euro V’ technical standards currently being considered by the European Commission. The meeting, organised by the German automobile club ADAC and the FIA, provided an opportunity for all the key stakeholders, including the car industry, green NGOs and consumer groups, and policymakers, to exchange views on the forthcoming legislation. Speakers at the meeting included Dr Reinhard Schulte-Braucks, Head of the European Commission’s Automotive Industry Unit; Dr Karl-Heinz Zierock of the German Environmental Agency, and representatives of Toyota and Shell.
Mr Alessi paid tribute to the progress achieved over the past decade in reducing pollutants from car traffic, and pointed out that many parts of the world, including the potentially massive car economies of India and China, now look to EU environmental standards as the framework for their own emission controls. The FIA Foundation chairman also called on governments to focus on measures to accelerate the renewal of the European car fleet, to ensure that society benefits from new, lower emission vehicles equipped with the latest clean engine technology as rapidly as possible.
