Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, has backed the efforts of the FIA Foundation, to raise the global profile of road safety. Speaking in an interview with the FIA Foundation, Mr Annan voiced his concerns over the trend of rising road fatalities in developing countries and said that ‘the UN has a voice, it has a convenient power and I think this is an area where we should do much more’.
Secretary General Annan said World Health Day was an opportunity ‘to highlight the impact [of road traffic injuries] and also to underscore the fact that these are avoidable, they are not just accidents, they are human errors which with proper governmental policy can be dealt with’.
Kofi Annan also praised the role of the FIA Foundation in its support of World Health Day and its efforts to improve the coordination of road safety activities, saying that he ‘would want to be able to do whatever I can to support their effort and I also applaud their leadership and the initiative they have taken here’.
