The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coordinator for the Partnership for Cleaner Fuels & Vehicles, Rob de Jong, has met technical experts from FIA Foundation member automobile clubs to discuss activity on the Partnership’s leaded petrol phase out campaign. In a session at the FIA Foundation International Technical Working Group meeting in Austria, Mr de Jong discussed potential links between automobile clubs in target countries and the Partnership’s activists. Transfer of knowledge from clubs that have managed information campaigns on lead phase out in industrialised countries was also discussed.
A campaign to phase out leaded petrol in sub-Saharan Africa is the current focus of the Partnership’s work. Only six countries use unleaded petrol, while ten still have vehicles running on both leaded and unleaded. Nineteen African countries have yet to introduce any unleaded petrol.
The Partnership encourages governments to develop national plans for lead phase out, and backs them up with technical workshops and awareness campaigns. The fruits of these efforts: six countries, including Nigeria and Ethiopia, have already phased lead out of fuel. Eight countries, including South Africa, Cameroon, Zambia and Rwanda, have set phase-out deadlines in 2004 and 2005.
