The world is on the brink of an epidemic of road traffic deaths and injuries and governments must take urgent action, a major international report warns today on World Health Day.
Political leadership is essential to combat this neglected public health issue. Unsafe road traffic systems are seriously harming global public health and development and the financial cost of road traffic injuries to the poorest nations is US$65 billion a year, more than they receive in development funds, the report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Bank says.
The FIA Foundation, which co-funded the World Report on Road Traffic Prevention, is calling for the United Nations to establish a global road safety agency to tackle the growing crisis.
