The FIA Foundation is supporting a research project in Malaysia examining the potential effectiveness of Visibility Enhancement Materials (VEMs) in preventing injuries amongst motor cyclists. The 18 month study is being coordinated by the Bloomberg School of Public Health at John Hopkins University and the Universiti Putra Malaysia. In the first test of its kind, the project will develop an intervention package and implement it in a local community. There are more than 5 million motorcycles and scooters in Malaysia (51% of total vehicles) and motorcyclists accounted for 3,500 fatalities in 2000, nearly 60% of Malaysia’s road death toll.
