Foundation meets ECLAC on road safety

09/11/2004

FIA Foundation Director for Road Safety Rita Cuypers has met with Mr Ian Thomson, Head of the Transport Unit of ECLAC, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago, Chile.

Preliminary discussions were held on organising a regional Road Safety Stakeholders Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean in 2005 to raise road safety on the political agenda and to mobilize stakeholders in the region. The Forum will be held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Heads of Transport of the UN Regional Commissions. The aim of the Forum would be to study the road safety problems that are specific to the region, identify the most important risk factors and formulate recommendations for action. The Foundation, which can count on an excellent network of motoring clubs in the region, will involve its members in this opportunity to help create a road safety culture in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Ms Cuypers was accompanied by Mr Cristian Sanhuesa, the Director of the National Driving School of the Automobile Club of Chile and Mr Elliot Coen of the Automobile Club of Costa Rica. The delegation also had a meeting with the Road Safety Council of Chile (CONASET) and Colonel Nelson Guzmán of the Chilean Police.
