A research project measuring the effectiveness of recent road safety reforms in Kenya is being supported by the FIA Foundation.
The two year project, managed by the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi, will monitor and evaluate the progress of road safety policies under the National Alliance Rainbow Coalition government of President Kibaki. The government took office with the intention of reducing corruption and tackling some of the serious road safety problems facing Kenya. New laws introduced in 2003 included roadworthiness tests and speed limiters for the matatu minibus taxis and a mandatory seat belt law. More than 3000 people are killed on Kenya’s roads each year.
