The European Road Assessment Programme (Euro RAP) and the WHO / World Bank World Report on road traffic injury prevention, both projects supported by the FIA Foundation, have received Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards.

The awards, patronized by Prince Michael of Kent, a member of the British royal family, were held at the Savoy Hotel in London on December 7th 2004. Euro RAP rates roads across Europe for safety design according to technical protocols, and also publishes risk maps detailing which roads have the worst safety record for fatal crashes. The programme has recently expanded to Australia, and feasibility studies are being conducted in the US.

The World Report, which also won the Prince Michael Premier Award, was led by WHO and the World Bank and co-funded by the FIA Foundation. Launched in April 2004, the report details the scale of the road safety problems facing the world, and particularly the developing world, identifies the key risk factors that contribute to road traffic injuries and proposes recommendations. The report has already been influential in raising the profile of global road safety. Etienne Krug and Margie Peden, from the WHO injuries prevention team, and Richard Scurfield from the World Bank, accepted the Premier Award from Prince Michael of Kent.

Prince Michael said: ‘I congratulate The WHO for dedicating World Health Day last April to this cause and thank the World Bank and many others including the FIA Foundation for their support for this significant Report’.
