Wearing a seat belt is the single most important thing you can do for your health

This is the message from the American Automobile Association (AAA) as it leads a high profile campaign to mark World Health Day 2004, which is dedicated to road safety. With a new twist on the world famous AIDS awareness symbol, AAA has designed a logo of a seatbelt shaped like a ribbon to highlight their health message. The AAA, together with the Canadian Automobile Association CAA, is calling on all car users to ‘buckle up today and everyday’ and will be distributing awareness ribbons to thousands of people across North America.

AAA President & CEO Robert L. Darbelnet launched the campaign with a speech to the prestigious Detroit Economic Club (see attached text). Mr Darbelnet, a trustee of the FIA Foundation, pointed out that 43,000 people are killed on US roads every year and said ‘enough is enough’.

The main objectives of the AAA’s campaign are to raise public awareness of the importance of seat belts and to promote primary seat belt laws and to promote the seat belt message to Latino communities (particularly immigrants) amongst whom seat belt use is low. On World Health Day itself, the AAA will be joining the Pan American Health Organisation, the US Department of Health and Human Services and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to promote road safety at a national press event in Washington D.C.
