Foundation joins global partnership for cleaner cars
31/12/2003
The FIA Foundation has become a partner in the Partnership for Cleaner Fuels and Vehicles. The Partnership was established following the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development with the aim of improving fuel standards and reducing vehicle emissions in developing countries. Air pollution in urban areas of many developing countries is a serious and growing problem, in contrast to industrialised nations where urban air quality has been improving dramatically. According to WHO only 15% of the largest cities in developing countries have acceptable levels of air quality. The Partnership, which has a secretariat based in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to assist in the transfer of experience and technologies, such as phasing out leaded fuel and introducing catalytic converters, and acts as a global clearing house for initiatives and advice. The FIA Foundation will be hoping to assist with the campaign to phase out leaded petrol, through its international network of automobile clubs.
