Aviation safety has been enhanced by stringent safety ‘systems’ and fingertip examination of aircraft involved in accidents. But what would it take to develop a similar regime for the car? Researchers from Manchester University have examined the steps that would be needed to introduce a ‘systems’ approach to investigating road traffic accidents, in a report commissioned by the FIA Foundation. Dr Dianne Parker and Dr Alex Dimmer of the Driver Behaviour Research Group, University of Manchester, study the information sources that are available, or would be needed, and examine the organisational deficiencies in private road transport that prevent a true ‘systems’ approach to road safety from being implemented. A copy of the full report is available from the FIA Foundation, priced £10.
