You are "almost twice as likely to die on the road in Spain than in the UK" says Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) as it launches a new campaign to keep tourists safe on the road while on holiday. According to FCO research, tourists from the UK are three times more likely to be involved in road accidents than locals and two thirds of Brits who have driven abroad have run into problems. Indeed, over 30% have driven on the wrong side of the road at some point on holiday. Of course, the purpose of the FCO campaign is to raise awareness and provide advice at the beginning of the holiday season. However, the report does raise wider issues, such as: can countries with growing tourist industries improve how they accommodate visiting drivers, and can a road safety component be built into the sustainable tourism agenda?
