We are fighting a war

India is starting to confront its “man made road deaths epidemic”, the BBC reports. With 300 people dying every day on India’s roads and over 2 million injured each year the Government knows only too well that it has to act. Legislation to create a new road safety agency is currently going through Parliament. Former Transport Ministry Secretary Sanjivi Sundar drafted the original proposals to shake up India’s road safety system. He explained why a new agency is needed: “We are fighting a war and we need a structured army to fight that war - that is what has been recommended. It might appear a bureaucratic reorganisation but it's more than that. It's an attempt to unify responsibility with respect to road safety,” he told the BBC.
