Upward curve for the UK

25/09/2008

The UK has just published some impressive figures on road safety showing that road deaths have fallen to their lowest level since records began in 1928, according to figures published by the Department for Transport. The improvement has in part been attributed to a shift in young driver behaviour and a reduction in the number of people driving while over the legal alcohol limit. However, drivers between 16 and 29 years old still make up 42% of all driver fatalities. The message has to be that further improvements are still required. The signs are that the UK is by no means standing still and there are further moves to draw on the experience of Sweden and the Netherlands which have been implementing a 'Safe Systems' approach. It will be interesting to see the effect if such knowledge transfer becomes embedded.
