Bulgaria is suffering carnage on its roads, with the situation so bad that hospital blood banks were drained over the summer. According to reports, major Bulgarian hospitals were forced to postpone scheduled surgery as there was neither enough blood nor enough free beds in intensive care wards. The media in the country has dubbed the situation a “war on the roads” and casualty levels are at 1,000 deaths and 10,000 injuries each year from a population of just over 7 million.
