Global solutions in Leipzig

30/05/2008

The International Transport Forum is holding its first annual Transport Forum, on the subject of transport and Climate Change at the moment. It is a really welcome development to see a new annual gathering at this sort of level - Angela Merkel addressed us here in Leipzig this morning – and the wider guest list is really impressive too. What has struck me most though, have been the number of calls there have been throughout for a more global approach to fuel efficiency regulation, from public, private and NGO speakers. There is no doubt that the high price of oil is motivating some of this, but there is also a wider realisation that to quote an oft-used phrase over the past two days, ‘global problems need global solutions’. I look forward to seeing the outcome of the Ministerial segment this evening, as well as the conclusions of the working sessions.
