EEA publishes GHG Report

23/06/2008

The EEA has released their latest assessment of the EU’s GHG emissions in a submission to the UNFCCC. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the European Union decreased slightly between 2005 and 2006. Overall emissions within the EU-27 fell by 14 million tonnes (0.3 %) and now stand 7.7 % below 1990 levels. Total emissions in the European Union were slightly more than 5.1 billion tonnes in 2006. However, this overall reduction masks different levels of performance across EU countries and sectors.

In particular, the report, identifies transportation as an area which experienced emission increases  of + 6.5 million tonnes or + 0.7 % over the period 2005-6:

Emissions from road transport increased in Spain and Poland, while they decreased in Germany. In Spain, the use of gasoline decreased by 4.6 %, whereas diesel consumption increased by 5.1 %. In Poland, both gasoline and diesel consumption increased by 6.1 % and 7.2 %, respectively. The German emissions reductions were mainly due to decreased gasoline consumption (– 5.6 %) pg10
