About the Commission

The Commission for Global Road Safety, led by Rt. Hon. Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, was established by the FIA Foundation with a remit to examine the framework for, and level of, international cooperation on road safety, and to make policy recommendations.

The members of the Commission serve in a personal capacity and have been chosen for their particular knowledge and expertise in road safety and related issues. Each has an extremely distinguished record of achievement in his or her field of work. One Commissioner serves from each of the Group of Eight (G8) countries and one from each of the World regions.

The Commission published its first report ‘Make Roads Safe: a new priority for sustainable development’ in June 2006. Our report takes the WHO/World Bank World Report on road traffic injury prevention, published in 2004, as its policy basis and examines ways in which the international community could be encouraged to raise its commitment and funding to global road safety in order to implement the recommendations of the World Report. Since publication, the Commission’s Make Roads Safe report has been widely welcomed across the world as an important contribution to raising the profile of global road traffic injuries.

Praise for the work of the Commission for Global Road Safety:

“The efforts of the Commission for Global Road Safety to promote better road safety worldwide are to be applauded” - Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, 1997-2006

“The recommendation of the Commission for Global Road Safety in its Make Roads Safe report – that 10 per cent of road infrastructure projects supported by bilateral and multilateral donors be committed to road safety – is a practical step for sustainable, equitable mobility worldwide” – Achim Steiner, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

“The Commission for Global Road Safety has done humanity a great service. Their report Make Roads Safe ought to be absolutely mandatory reading, not just for every G8 leader, but for every leader in a developing country, for everyone in a developing country who is involved in urban planning, in transport infrastructure and in other areas as well” - Kevin Watkins, Director, UNDP Human Development Report

“I commend the work of Lord Robertson’s Commission for Global Road Safety and the key recommendations of his Commission’s ‘Make Roads Safe’ report, in particular that investment in road infrastructure for development should include a strong road safety component and the proposal that the UN should organise a global Ministerial meeting on road safety” – Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1997-2007

“We…welcome the report of the Commission for Global Road Safety and endorse its principal recommendations for a $300 million ten year global road safety action plan, the commitment of 10% of all road sector projects to road safety initiatives including rating assessment, design and systems management and to hold a global United Nations ministerial meeting on road safety…” Declaration of African Transport & Health Ministers, Accra, February 2007
