Grantmaking

Alongside its own programme of activities, the FIA Foundation also makes charitable grants. Details of how to apply for an FIA Foundation grant can be found below.

Introduction to Grant Applications

All applications are subject to detailed scrutiny in order that the FIA Foundation only supports work that meets our charitable objectives. Project applications will also be assessed in the context of our on-going Programme priorities and our Current Interests.

To find out whether your project proposal may be suitable for consideration by the FIA Foundation, and to understand our application procedures, please read all the contents of this section of the site carefully.

Applications must meet the Foundation's Objectives and Priorities

Project applications must meet at least one of the general or specific objectives and priorities of the FIA Foundation as detailed below.

Our objectives are to promote public safety and public health, the protection and preservation of human life and the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment through:

  • promoting research, disseminating the results of research and providing information in any matters of public interest which include road safety, automobile technology, the protection and preservation of human life and public health, transport and public mobility and the protection of the environment; and
  • promoting improvement in the safety of motor sport, and of drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

Stages in the Grant Application Procedure

Stage One

Having read the Foundation's objectives if you believe that your project proposal meets all the necessary criteria we have outlined, your next step will be to complete a Grant Application Form.

Please contact Jane Pearce, Programmes Director, for a grant application form on j.pearce@fiafoundation.org.

What you do

The Grant Application Form is your opportunity to explain your proposal. Our form is designed to enable you to provide all the basic information that we will need to assess whether or not your project would be of interest to the FIA Foundation. Read the instructions on the form carefully and provide all the information requested. You may also wish to provide supplementary information to support your application. Grants can only be used for the specific purpose or project mentioned in the application and for no other purpose.

Please submit a hard copy of your Grant Application Form, which must be approved and signed in a covering letter by an authorised officer of your organisation. We must receive a hard copy of the completed form for your application to be considered.

What we do

Our staff will receive and consider your Grant Application Form. It will be assessed against four criteria:

  • how well it fits with the objectives of the FIA Foundation;
  • whether it complements (or duplicates) projects already supported by us;
  • whether the outputs will be sufficiently unique and/or beneficial to warrant support; and
  • whether it fits with the current Programme priorities and/or budgetary commitments of the FIA Foundation.

Depending on the outcome of this assessment, we will advise you as to whether or not we wish to proceed with your application. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing.

If we are interested in your proposal, and wish to receive more details, we will invite you to proceed to Stage Two.

Stage Two

If we decide to proceed, your application will be short-listed for consideration by our Programmes Committee. The Programmes Committee will decide whether or not to forward your application for consideration by the FIA Foundation's Board of Trustees. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by mail.

Applicants who would like a more detailed explanation as to why their proposal has been rejected, or who have concerns about the decision making process, may write to the Programmes Unit, FIA Foundation, 60 Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DS, United Kingdom and request further information about the decision that has been made on their proposal. Those who are still dissatisfied may wish to avail themselves of the FIA Foundation’s Complaints Procedure.

Stage Three

The Board of Trustees makes the final decision on the allocation of Foundation grant.

Applying for an FIA Foundation Grant: your basic questions answered

Q: Who can apply?

A: The FIA Foundation supports projects by organisations, public and private, Non-Governmental Organisations and other qualifying bodies, working in the public interest within the scope of the FIA Foundation's objectives.

Q: What projects do we support?

A: The FIA Foundation considers a wide range of project proposals. These include research, technical studies and tests, awareness campaigns, policy and analysis, and pilot schemes.

  • We prefer applications that are multi-national, or that result in outputs that are applicable and beneficial to more than one country;
  • We prefer not to provide more than 50% funding for any single project;
  • We prefer to support projects of limited duration (e.g. one financial year).
  • The FIA Foundation has recognised the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety as its active partner in motor sport safety research. All enquiries about funding for motor sport safety projects should be directed to the FIA Institute, which is managing a research programme with support from the FIA Foundation. See www.fiainstitute.com:

Q: Where do we support projects?

A: The FIA Foundation will consider projects from across the world. Applications from developing countries are particularly welcomed.

Q: When do we support projects?

A: The Board of Trustees establishes the overall grant budget for each programme year in October of the previous year. We will consider applications from August of the previous year onwards until all the year's budget has been allocated (with funding of projects approved by our Board of Trustees from October onwards).
